GOOSE BIOT PREP

Goose biots are used on many flies. They are used as tails on prince nymphs, feelers on stone fly nymphs, legs for hoppers and wrapped as bodies on dry flies. Goose biots come from the leading edge of the primary wing feathers and come in different colors. The preparing and tying operations related to goose biots can be used with biots from birds other than geese. I really like turkey biots in natural color for hopper legs. Most biots come already stripped from the feather and are all connected by part of the quill. If you need to strip the biots off the feather, soak the feather in hot water for about 30 minutes, take a razor blade and make a cut at the base of the feather stem just breaking the hard outer layer and then pull in a peeling motion up the feather. It is a real pain so just forget all that and buy your biots already stripped.

1. Take the quill section, with biots attached, and bend the base with your fore finger so the biots spread apart.
2. Take the first two biots and hold tightly.
3. In an upward peeling motion, strip the biots off the quill.
4. Cut the base of the biots where they are connected. Holding the biots in your right thumb and fore finger and sliding them back and forth over each other, even the tips up.
5. Grab the biots by the tips, making sure the tips stay even, and cut the base of both biots so they are the same length.

You are now ready to:
